What is Special Education and who is eligible for services?
Special education is instruction tailor-made to fit the unique learning strengths, and needs of the individual student with disabilities, from age three through high school. Special education programs and related services focus on academics special therapeutic and other related services to help the child overcome difficulties in all areas of development. Special education services may be provided in a variety of educational settings, but are required by the IDEA to be delivered in the least restrictive environment. A student must be evaluated and identified as having a disability to be eligible for special education programs and related services. The disability categories are:
